Accessories For The M1A Rifle
The M14 didn't last very long as the US Army's standard infantry rifle. Although the M14 had been given away, sold or cut up by the US Government in large numbers, it maintained its popularity with civilian shooters and eventually regained its popularity with the military in the Global War on Terror. All four services now employ the M14 in various capacities from ceremonial to EoD disposal and the M39 and EBR are standard platoon weapons in the USMC and US Army in Afghanistan respectively. Several private companies took over supply of M14s to private shooters after the production machinery was sold to Taiwan with Springfield Armory selling various variants of their M1A rifle four decades. Polytech, a Chinese company supplied many M14 type rifles to the US until Chinese imports were banned in the 1990s.
There is no shortage of accessories available for these popular rifles. You can make the M14 or M1A the equal of the latest, state of the art .308 battle rifles. You can improve the ergonomics of the M14, reduce or eliminate its muzzle climb and mount the optics to take advantage of its long range accuracy.
Mounting current generation optics has always been problematic on the M14, but various solutions are available that work. Handguard replacement rail systems can be a good way to go if you only want a forward mounted optic or want to use a clip guide mounted rear rail section. One of the best of these is the Amega Ranges Mini Scout Mount. This handguard rail clamps around the barrel very securely indeed and will increase the accuracy of some rifles. The unit is versatile and you can add weaver or Picatinny side rail sections to take lasers or flashlights. The Mini Scout will not prevent the use of USGI iron sights or interfere with reciver mounted scope bases. This unit will not fit non USGI profile barrels, so it cannot be used on any Chinese production rifle or on any unit fitted with a heavy or stainless barrel.
The next step up is to purchase a replacement M14 stock. Arguably the best stock on the market is the Troy M14stock or Modular Chassis System. The Troy M14 MCS is machined from a solid billet of aluminiun and takes any M14, M1A or SOCOM 16 rifle regardless of barrel weight. The Troy stock is easily fitted with ordinary tools and will mean your rifle never needs a bedding job again. There are four rails at the 12, 3, 6 and 9 o'clock positions, the top one of which is on the same level for the complete length of the system. This ensures co-witnessing is easily accomplished and gives an exceptional flexibility in mounting. Cleverly, the Troy M14 stock puts the stock slightly above the axis of the bore, utterly eliminating muzzle climb. Once you factor in the weight of the side mount that you might othewise have used, the Troy M14 stock is equal to the weight of a wood stocked M14.
The Troy M14 MCS can take any folding or telescopic stock than can fit the AR15 rifle. For example the Magpul CTR stock. Troy battle sights are very robust and make an ideal back up in the event of main optic failure. You can also mount a fore-grip like the Troy modular combat grip under the front of the weapon to aid controllability. The Troy M14 stock is quite expensive, but it is a no holds barred solution that will utterly revoliutionize the handling and rapid fire capability of your rifle. It also has the benefit of closely mimicking the appearance of the M4/16 weapon system and thus not making the person carrying it a high priority target.
